The size of the unit and, therefore, the power they generate is determined by the number of solar cells in its design. Cells in the solar panel do not act independently but together and their formation is determined by the desired voltage output and current capability. Solar cells use the sun's light energy, known as photons, to generate an electric current. This current is then taken from the panels by conducting wires.Although a renewable form of energy, solar panels are not entirely efficient, only managing to harness a fraction of the power of the sun's rays. This is due to the wide spectrum of frequencies of light that the sun emits compared to the narrow spectrum of frequencies that the panels can absorb.
