Geeksphone and Mozilla announced today that they will be teaming up to release smartphones featuring Mozilla’s Firefox OS, offering two developer preview handsets that will assist developers in prepping for the release of the new platform. The units are expected to be available in February, and the cost of the units have yet to be revealed.

The two developer units, named the Keon and the Peak, are a bit different looking than the device that was showcasing Firefox OS at CES, but some of the specs are somewhat similar. Here’s what to expect from Mozilla’s new handset offerings:

Keon: (Pictured below in Orange) 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 3-megapixel camera, 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, microSD slot, 1,580mAh battery, UMTS 900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1900/2100
Peak: (Pictured below in White) 4.3-inch qHD IPS display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, 512MB RAM, 4GB ROM, microSD slot, 1,800mAh battery, UMTS 900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1900/2100

A release of the Firefox OS in the U.S. has yet to be officially announced, but Sprint has tossed its hat into the ring by voicing support for Firefox OS. Manufacturers such as ZTE and Alcatel are backing the fledgling Firefox OS, as well as Spanish carrier Telefonica. Although official release dates of the public version of Firefox OS and hardware are still sketchy, Mozilla is definitely making progress towards the release of a new smartphone OS. With the upcoming release of the BlackBerry 10 OS and Firefox OS, it looks as though the mobile OS ecosystem will be growing in 2013

Smartphones are no longer restricted to elites in the society and they have become very popular with the average mobile user. This explains the huge buzz in the smartphone app development market with hundreds of smartphone developers creating thousands of applications each month.
