I have to admit, over the years, I have become very partial to a handful of distros that I find I can count on as reliable for business.
For a desktop, I lean mostly on opensuse. Hands down for me the Linux desktop leader. This is followed next probably by Mandriva which is on shaky ground in terms of financial stability. Though the new spin off might bring more relief to that.
When it comes to distros for servers, CentOS, which is essentially Red Hat without the trademarks and Debian.
I will say I favor Debian over CentOS, but they are both rock solid reliable when push comes to shove.
There are a lot of "community" distros out theree and you might wonder why Ileft out ubuntu as well.
Well, for ubuntu, I find they mess their code up to unstable and un-reliable levels trying to be clever and attractive instead of reliable as the Debian they originally base it on.
fedora is another one. Though supported by Red Hat, it shoots for "bleeding Edge" technology way too much to be relied on in business.
The others are pretty much hobbyists who you, being blunt, can't count on for longevity or consistent support via forum or otherwise.
That might be fine for a home desktop, but not in a home office or "regular" office. |
