Once you get to the foothills, you should sdtop in Oakhurst and visit the Yoesmite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. With genuine, full size steam locomotives, you can actually go on a train ride. I highly recommend the Saturday night dinner and singalong. Either way, it's a great way to start a trip. Head for Yosemite a little early, and spend the night so that you can ride the train.You never can tell in the sierras. Nights will be cool, and there's always a small chance you can get some snow. You'll have to pay close attention to the weather forecast to see if you might need some snow chains. Most years you don't have to worry too much.
