OK folks, I have a new desktop/workstation winner.
Yep, finally taking the top spot over my long time favorite openSuse, Mint Debian edition is now firmly seated in the top spot.
Mint Debian edition has been out for a little while now and had some early glitches to work out at the beginning but showed lots of promise.
The promises are being fulfilled. Beyond a shadow of a doubt. This is what Ubuntu should have been.
I just installed the 32 bit bit Xfce edition (201104) on an old Dell Optiplex GX60 Workstation.
This machine has an 80 GB hard drive which I upgraded from the original 40 GB hd. 512 MB ram PC133, no CD drive. Old machine, meant to be a simple workstation.
The gnome version is what I tried first on it, and yeah, I knew it would be slow but it performed pretty well for the hardware it was on. However, off it went and I installed the Xfce version which is a tad more recent and holy moly. You would never believe this machine is the dreg it is.
Snappy performance. quick app loads. quick boot.
Looks good (clean) All the Mintifications for hoedesktop usability.
This is a very effective and efficient distro.
What's even better is that this is all Mint tools sitting on top of standard Debian testing as a rolling release.
For me, desktop Linux has reached it's summit with Mint Debian. This is Da Bomb!!!
OK, I have been chided. Someone wrote me an email and asked me to tone down the excitement to cough up the problems Mint Debian has.
There are some bugs. Mint is straightforward about that. They have an official buglist on the download page.
The only real snafus I have experienced so far on this install are these:
These are typical Dell machines, they are built with proprietary hardware like soundcards, videocards, etc. Things that Dell has been known for for years now. no surprises really. just something one learns to put up with.
There is a boot problem in that there is a 'dead' space created when I partitioned the drive, that was my fault though, not LMDE.
There is this annoying tendency to freeze up everything. Again, my fault because despite the limited hardware resources, I keep trying to run resource heavy apps like media players, etc... so, again, with 512 mb of ram, and trying to watch video clips and listen to a music player at the same time, I'm not shocked that it's freezing. my fault again.
some apps seem to not be playing well. yet again, multimedia apps. but I'm not sure if it's because these are apps in their software store or in the debian repos. I think there's some tiny glitches in compatibility with store apps and making them available to the debian version.
I could be wrong though and banshee still just sucks the way I think it always has.
That's it. that's all my problems with it. none of them dealbreakers. all of them easy to deal with.
